MERIDIAN was founded on a refusal. In 1946, in a narrow workshop above the Rhône, our founder declined a commission for a matched pair of rings — because no two stones, he insisted, are ever truly equal, and to pretend otherwise is to lie to the light. That refusal became a house. For eight decades we have cut exactly one stone a year, and only when a stone worth a year has been found.
Everything the maison does bends toward that single object. We do not run a collection, a boutique network, or a seasonal line. We do not chase carat weight for its own sake, and we treat the auction record as a curiosity rather than a goal. The whole of our attention — a master cutter, a colourist, a setter, and the years of judgement behind them — is spent learning how one piece of rough wishes to be read, and then reading it once, correctly, forever.
To cut a single stone a year is not scarcity as marketing. It is the honest arithmetic of doing the work by hand and refusing the second attempt. A stone this rare cannot be practised on. So the maison moves slowly on purpose, and passes the finished stone to a single owner who understands that they are not buying an object so much as accepting custody of a moment of light that will outlast them.

The Solaire began as a single piece of rough selected over a decade of searching. We reject a thousand for every one we keep.

The Rough
An untreated violet stone of exceptional saturation, chosen for a clarity that carries light from the table clean through to the culet.

The Colour
A natural, unheated hue graded once and never enhanced — the shift from twilight to amethyst you see is entirely the stone's own.

Fifty-eight facets angled to a tenth of a degree, so every turn of the hand throws a private spectrum across the room.

Held in a hand-forged 18k sable-gold claw, warmed with palladium so the mount never yellows across a lifetime of wear.

The Science of the Cut
Light enters once. It must leave as fire.
A brilliant cut is not decoration — it is optics. Every facet angle is calculated so that light striking the table is captured, folded through the pavilion by total internal reflection, and returned to the eye split into its spectrum. Cut the pavilion a degree too shallow and the stone leaks light through its base; a degree too steep and it darkens. The Solaire is angled to a tenth of a degree.
i.Entry
Light meets the flat table at a controlled angle. A steeper crown gathers more of the room; too steep and it glares. The Solaire's crown is set to hold a broad field of light without washing out.
ii.Reflection
Inside, the pavilion facets act as mirrors. When light strikes them beyond the critical angle it cannot escape — it reflects wall to wall in total internal reflection, losing nothing to the base.
iii.Dispersion
On the way out, each wavelength bends by a different amount, fanning white light into spectral colour. That fan is fire — and it is the whole reason the angles are cut to a tenth of a degree.
Provenance
Eleven months. One pair of hands.
A single master carries the Solaire from rough to final polish. There is no second attempt — so it is slow on purpose.

The Search
One stone is chosen from a decade of rough. It is studied under light for six weeks before a single facet is planned — the cutter must learn how it wants to be read.

The Plan
The cut is mapped to a tenth of a degree, weighing carat against fire. A wrong angle here cannot be undone; the whole stone is committed at once.

The Cutting
Fifty-eight facets are ground and polished by hand across five months, each checked against the last until the light runs edge to edge without a shadow.

The Record
The finished stone is laser-inscribed on its girdle with a mark only a loupe will find. You will never see it. It will always be there.
Certification & Provenance
A stone is only as trusted as its paper.
The Solaire arrives with an unbroken record: an independent laboratory report, a laser mark you will never see, and a chain of custody documented from a single named source to your hand. Nothing about its history is left to be taken on faith.
The stone is graded by an independent gemmological laboratory with no commercial interest in its sale. The report records weight, colour origin, clarity, cut and fluorescence, and confirms the hue as natural and unheated — the single most consequential line in the document.
Its girdle carries a laser inscription matched to the report number, legible only under a loupe. It is the stone's fingerprint: invisible to the wearer, unforgeable, and permanent.

The Laboratory

The relationship begins the moment the stone is yours.
A Solaire is not sold and forgotten. It is placed into a service that runs for as long as the stone is in your care — and, should you wish, for the generation that follows.

Bespoke setting
The mount is designed around you, not a catalogue. Our setter works from the stone's proportions and your own hand to forge a single 18k claw that shows the maximum of the stone and the minimum of metal.

Lifetime care
Cleaning, re-tipping, and inspection are provided for the life of the piece at no charge. Every visit is logged against the stone's register entry, so its condition is documented as carefully as its grading.

Private viewing
The stone is shown by appointment only — at the atelier in Genève, or discreetly in your own city. There is no shop floor, no queue, and no other client in the room.

Absolute discretion
Ownership is never published. Correspondence is held in confidence, settlement is arranged privately, and the register that proves the stone is yours is visible to no one but you and the maison.

Before you write to us.
01How does a private viewing work?
Viewings are held by appointment only. Most begin with a short conversation to understand what you are looking for, after which the stone is presented either at our atelier in Genève or, for established enquiries, discreetly in your own city. There is never more than one client with the stone at a time.
02How is payment handled, and is it discreet?
Settlement is arranged privately once a viewing has taken place and terms are agreed. We do not process payment online and we do not publish the buyer. Arrangements are made directly through the maison and its bank, with the same discretion that governs every other part of the relationship.
03Can the setting be designed to my specification?
Yes. The Solaire can be acquired as a loose certified stone or set to a bespoke design forged around your hand. Our setter will work from the stone's proportions and your preferences; the mount is made once, by hand, and never repeated.
04Is the stone treated, and how do I know?
The Solaire is natural and unheated. This is confirmed on the independent laboratory report that accompanies the stone, and the report number is matched to a laser inscription on the girdle — so the paper and the stone can never be quietly separated.
